New poem 1 - Nature's infinite reach

Nature’s infinite reach

How many noises can we make,
that sound like
the wind,
the sea,
the birds?
So few,
insignificant
against the infinite voices
of nature.

The wind creates, and destroys
together in seconds,
what we take years
to build.
We harness it for ourselves,
but only while it chooses,
powerless against its endless,
infinite flow.
It is not the sea,
that is beyond the land,
but the land that is
within the sea’s embrace,
sometimes gentle,
often harsh,
but always at its mercy.

From the earliest human time,
the sea has given
and taken from us,
no less now
than then, but
always in its own way,
uncontrollable.

Birds, nature’s emissaries,
sweep out to where
we cannot go,
beyond reach of mind
and hand.
in harmony with nature,
as we can never be,
spreading the future
before them, and amongst us.

What can we do
that compares to
the wind,
the sea,
the birds?

Though we might try,
the infinite reach of
nature,

is always beyond us.
